Mud therapy (pelotherapy)

The muds are a product of slow decomposition under water dead small animals and plants. They are divided into silt sulfide mud formed in salt lakes and estuaries (Tambukansky dirt), and sapropel, formed in fresh water (the old Russian dirt).

The mechanism of therapeutic action of sulfide mud plays a major role, the hydrogen sulfide formed due to the activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria in a sludge of dirt. In sapropelic silt mud therapeutic factors are organic substances (wax, protein, fat), organic acids, alcohols, resins and esters.

In the mud are thermal, chemical and mechanical effects. The mud has a high thermal capacity and low thermal conductivity, making manifest a pronounced thermal effect. Currently, the mechanism of therapeutic action of the mud more importance is attached to non-thermal, and chemical factors. However, the heat factor increases the chemical effect and causes a General reaction of the organism. Absorption of chemicals occurs due to the reciprocating movement of fluid in the sweat glands. Of the chemicals absorbed into the blood, the most important are the sulphide, trace elements, organic acids (humic, valeric, etc.), esters, biologically active substances and various biogenic stimulators.

A single application of mud application is a weak irritant, and causes a course adjustment of the entire body and changing its reactivity. Mud therapy is one of the most active therapies for chronic inflammatory diseases. In pediatric practice mud applications you can use from 2 years of age with cerebral palsy – with 6-months of age.
